AMHERST - Amherst police made 81 arrests over the weekend, and many of those arrested were not from this area, police said yesterday.

And despite it being the weekend of the annual Spring Concert, University of Massachusetts police arrested only 20 people, Deputy Chief Patrick T. Archbald said.

Amherst Police Detective Lt. Ronald A. Young said that there were approximately 20 arrests on Friday night and 60 on Saturday. The majority were not University of Massachusetts students, he said.

The largest party police were called to was on Saturday night at the Townhouse condominiums on Meadow Street where 900 to 1,000 people were gathered, and some began throwing bottles, Young said.

As police dispersed the crowd, some fights broke out and arrests were made, Young said.

The apartments on Hobart Lane, once known for the crowded and unruly Hobart Hoe-down in years past, only had a few smaller parties, Young said.

Police expect another busy weekend ahead and will be prepared for it, he said.

At UMass, Archbald attributed working with students ahead of time and coordinating sufficient security at the Spring Concert and other events on campus for the relatively quiet weekend.

"It really paid off in terms of limited arrests. The students were very responsible and able to enjoy the weekend without excessive amounts of alcohol and disruptions," Archbald said.
